Jay-Z & Kanye West Settle Lawsuit Over Uncleared Sample
Jay-Z and Kanye West can rest a little easier. The duo have settled their copyright infringement lawsuit with Syl Johnson. Johnson sued The Throne back in October for The Throne’s unauthorized use of Syl Johnson’s song “Diffrerent Strokes.” Jay-Z and Kanye West sampled “Different Strokes” for “The Joy.” “The Joy” is a bonus track on Watch The Throne.
Pete Rock produced The Throne’s bonus cut and absolves himself from any liability. Rock says the Syl Johnson sample was added to the beat after he was finished working on it.
Syl Johnson is notorious for suing for unauthorized samples. In the past, he’s sued Michael Jackson and Cypress Hill for the same issue.
