San Diego Comic Con has quickly become an international cultural touchstone since its start in 1970. Every sector of media, from AAA gaming and comic companies to big Hollywood studios, uses SDCC to unveil their newest projects to hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world. And from big superhero updates to TV crossovers and transfers to digital distribution, here’s the biggest news to come from SDCC 2014.
MUST SEE: 7 Things To Know About “Guardians of the Galaxy”
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” panel
San Diego Comic Con is never truly complete without a Marvel Studios panel to blow the roof off of Hall H, and they brought the house down again this year. The entire “Age of Ultron” cast, including newcomers Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen as siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, James Spader as the maniacal robot Ultron, and Paul Bettany as the android The Vision, each spoke on the fun they’ve had working with the ensemble and how in awe of Thor they all were. Josh Brolin crashed the party wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, indicating his role as Thanos, The Mad Titan near the end. Check out the panel below!
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” Complete Concept Art Poster
Even though fans who didn’t attend were shut out of new “Age of Ultron” footage, we got the next best thing in concept art posters. The art shows each Avenger fighting off Ultron robots and features our first good look at The Vision. Check out the huge collage below!
Wesley Snipes Is Still Interested In Playing Blade
Going back to where the Marvel movie sensation began, Wesley Snipes talked with MTV about the possibility of Blade joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“I’d be open to it. I think we’ve got some stones left unturned and there’s some latitude left for us to build on and I’d love to get back in the suit again and do some things I’ve learned how to do now that I didn’t know how to do then. I think we’re better at making that kind of a film now. Some of the things we did in the early parts of the franchise were experimental and now they’ve become customary in a lot of the Avengers films and other comic book adaptations.”
I can see a lot of interesting ways to incorporate the day-walking Blade into the MCU and it would make him the first actor who played a hero before the formation of Marvel Studios to come back and do it again!
“Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” Teaser/Wonder Woman costume reveal
Warner Bros. started their panel with a very quick teaser for their upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel/”Justice League” prequel. The clip showed Batman, decked out in heavy duty armor, turning on the Bat Signal in the rain as Superman looms overhead. It looks like the tradition of grim and gritty will continue over at DC. The short glimpse has been taken off of most every site on the internet at this point, so good luck finding it! Warner Bros. also revealed the look of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman for the first time. She’s sporting her classic look, albeit in drowned out colors like her male counterparts.
Adult Swim Premieres “Mike Tyson Mysteries”
Possibly due to the success of Afrocentric series like “Black Dynamite” and “The Boondocks,” Adult Swim is now working closely with Iron Mike himself on a new animated series. Tyson will star as the head of a Hannah-Barbara style mystery team complete with a ghost sidekick, Asian computer genius, and a binge drinking pigeon. Jabberjaw, this is not. Check out the trailer below!
“Mad Max: Fury Road” Trailer
Warner Bros. is bringing “Mad Max” back from the dead and showed off a lengthy trailer starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, and Zoe Kravitz in the post-apocalyptic desert space. If there’s any old franchise that’s better suited to today’s post apocalypse obsessed pop culture, I don’t know about it.
“The Walking Dead” Season 5 Trailer
Everyone’s favorite band of scrappy survivors are coming back to AMC for a fifth season and if this latest trailer is any indication, it’s going to be its most brutal yet. It’s clear that Rick, Michonne, and company have formed a shaky alliance with the people of Terminus, so the blood and the walkers are sure to be in good supply this season. The Walking Dead is back on October 12.
Godzilla and King Kong Returning To The Screen
In the wake of “Pacific Rim” and the new “Godzilla” bringing life (and massive profits) back into the giant monster genre, Legendary Pictures announced their plans to bring Godzilla back for a sequel and the other King of The Monsters, King Kong, back to the screen for the second time. Yes, Peter Jackson brought the character back very recently, but you see where this is going, right? Kong’s new flick, subtitled “Skull Island,” and the new Godzilla are both set to release in 2016, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a Godzilla/Kong mash-up is in the pipeline for Legendary.
