More than 20 years after its inception in the early ’90s, VICE is currently in the process of securing its own cable TV network. The content company, which began as a local magazine and more recently blossomed into an online behemoth, is negotiating a deal with A&E Networks to take over the History Channel’s unsuccessful spinoff channel, H2 for its own programming.
While details are still murky, VICE’s chief exec Shane Smith spoke with The New York Times recently and it sounds like the company is interested in tapping Kanye West for his own show on the possible network.
What can we expect if VICE gets the go-ahead? We already know that Action Bronson’s stoney gourmet food program Fuck That’s Delicious will get a nod given his relationship with the company, but it now sounds like the would-be-network wants to tap a far bigger star, at least figuratively speaking.
“I don’t care about money; we have plenty of money,” Smith said, speaking generally about the company’s direction. “I care about strategic deals.” The same article includes mention that VICE wants to tackle “non-news programming” if it gets the cable slot, which means, if nothing else, Ye probably won’t be trying to finesse his Anchorman 2 cameo into a real news-desk job.
