“XO” isn’t the biggest song off Beyonce‘s self-titled album, but it’s one of the best. It’s also the one that’s getting her sued.
Last November, backup singer Ahmad Javon Lane publicly accused Beyonce of stealing his “XOXO” to make “XO.” He officially sued her last year, and it’s only just now that she’s decided to defend herself against the $7 million, according to Radar.
Beyonce’s defense was what most in her shoes would’ve done: She’s Beyonce, so she has no need to do so. In addition to claiming the two tracks don’t sound alike, Beyonce reportedly said her “17 Grammy awards and 118 million records sold” made such an accusation ridiculous. Lane also apparently never filed a “copyright registration” for his song.
Beyonce sounds confident, but everything is in question after that Marvin Gaye/Robin Thicke verdict. We’ll update as the story develops, but for now, listen for yourself below to see if you spot any similarities.
