There’s so much to know about the girl who just ended Serena Williams‘ 20-game winning streak. Sloane Stephens is a new force to be reckoned with, and here are a few facts about the budding tennis star.
5. Forget Sports Illustrated! You can find her in Vogue.
She was featured as best dressed for the December 2012 issue alongside Azaelia Banks and other newcomers. Not bad!
4. Friends over foes.
Despite beating Serena in the Australian Open, Sloane and the Williams sisters are good friends, and Serena is one of her biggest inspirations.
3. She is the wildcard queen.
So far since playing tennis professionally, she has received the wildcard nine times for tournaments such as the U.S. Open and the L.A. Women’s Championship. So far in 2013, her game has gotten better, and she has only lost two matches.
2. Sometimes home schooling is the way to go.
She started playing tennis at nine but had to travel so much that her grades began to suffer. Not that she was a bad student, but if you don’t show up in class, your grades do down. By 12, Sloane was home-schooled. She graduated from high school in 2011.
1. Athleticism runs in her family.
Her mother, Sybil Smith, was a swimmer for Boston University and was the first African-American female to be named First Team All-American in Division I history. Her father, John Stephens, played in the NFL for the Patriots. He was killed in a car accident in 2009.
