6 Defunct Grammy Categories: Pour Out A Little Liquor - Page 2

In 2012 the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences eliminated 31 categories from The Grammy Awards contention. Here are 6 that we wanted to bid farewell to with some animated assistance.

1) Polka

Grand Opening: 1958
Grand Closing: 2009

Not even Christina Hendricks playing an accordion could save this.

2) Best Female Rap Solo Performance
Grand Opening: 2003
Grand Closing: 2005

Nicki Minaj will be just fine competing with the boys but so far she is batting O for 4 in her Grammy nominations.

“F*ck” indeed…

3) Best Metal Performance
Grand Opening: 1990
Grand Closing: 2012

Who is pissed about this? Metallica, who holds the record for the most wins in this category (6). Who is dancing on the grave? The band Megadeth, who holds the Susan Lucci style record for the most nominations without a win,(9) The Tinman is also not pleased.

4) Best R&B Instrumental Performance
Grand Opening: 1970
Grand Closing: 1993
Winners: Miles Davis “Doo-Bop” in 1993, Soul II Soul for “african dance” herbie back “Rockit”

That “Rockit” video was a creepy good time tho’.

5) Best Rock Gospel Album
Grand Opening: 1991
Grand Closing: 2012

Rock and Gospel? We knew you could Stomp for the Lord but who knew you could rock out for Jesus?

6) Best Disco Album
Grand opening & grand closing: 1980
In the definition of irony, Gloria Gaynor won the only Grammy for Best Disco Recording for “I Will Survive.” (Not so much, huh?) Travolta is still dancing tho’.
