“12 Years” Director Wants More Done With Slave Narrative [VIDEO]
Steve McQueen’s NAACP Award winning drama “12 Years A Slave” is a favorite to take home an Oscar in March, but the director has even more far-reaching goals in mind.
The film is based on the real life account of Solomon Northup, a free Black man living in upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery for over a decade. McQueen feels the story should be added to school curriculums.
“Solomon’s story is timeless,” McQueen told TheUrbanDaily.com and TV One’s “What’s Hot” spotlight. “Slavery happened to us. So we have to look at it and understand it for the younger generation. That’s why I hope the book will be on the national curriculum…”
McQueen is working with Penguin and Plan B to make this a reality. Watch more from the interview below:
