Common & John Legend Win An Oscar For “Glory” From The Movie “Selma”

During the post-show press conference for their Golden Globe-winning song, “Glory,” John Legend and Common explained how the song began with a simple phone call and an exchange of ideas. As the pair notched their second win of the 2015 awards season, that phone call seems even more important. “Glory” from the film Selma won the Academy Award for Best Music (Original Song) at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

“Glory” is only the third song featuring rap music to ever win an Academy Award. The previous two were Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile and Three 6 Mafia and Frayser Boy’s “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” from Hustle & Flow.

In addition to winning both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award, “Glory” appeared on the Billboard magazine “Hot 100” singles chart, where it peaked at the #92 spot.
