Boom Moment In Hip-Hop (May 28th)

On this date in 1991, N.W.A released their second and final studio album, Niggaz4Life, known as EFIL4ZAGGIN. The group would disband shortly after with the departure of Dr. Dre and songwriter The D.O.C’s to Death Row Records. The album lacked one key member, Ice Cube, as he already left the group a few years prior. The album did very well commercially, and reached No.1 on the Billboard 200 charts in its second week.

The album also featured a mini-documentary that chronicled the making of the album and three music videos. You can watch it below.

The album caused major controversy due to its title choice, and was referred to as Straight Out of Compton 2 by some publications. Many censorship measures were being introduced at the time, causing the reversal of the title name, and the controversy surrounding the content of the music in regards to mainstream America. The album was even removed from music stores in the United Kingdom.

N.W.A’s run was short in years together, but their impact on hip-hop and music as a whole is undeniable, regardless of the controversy it may have caused at that time. It was time for artists to voice the real issues of the inner city workings, and that’s exactly what they accomplished. This album to date has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.
