Why Whitney Houston's Estate Likely Won't See Future Royalty Checks
There’s been much speculation about the financies of Whitney Houston even before the singer’s tragic death. Now that Whitney has passed sales of her albums and singles have skyrocketed. However, don’t expect any of the money being earned to trickle down to her family, namely daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. Music-industry blogger Wayne Rosso quoted a label executive “familiar with Sony’s accounting” who said the Houston estate won’t likely see any royalty checks from her record label “in our lifetime” — and maybe longer. Why? Remember the widely reported deal the singer struck with Arista in 2001 for $100 million? Well apparently due to the number of advances and loans she took from the that deal, Sony Music has much to recoup. Rosso estimates that Houston would have to posthumously sell more than 5 million albums “to repay her advances and start to get royalty checks.
